The Department of “Molecular Biology and Genetics” is housed in 2 buildings – mainly in Building 10 (“Fotis Kafatos”) and partially in Building 8 – with a total area of 2,500 sq m. The facilities are located in the Dragana area (Alexandroupolis University Campus). The courses are held in classrooms and laboratories. Specifically, the courses are held in two (2) classrooms with a capacity of approximately 120 people each and the training room of the Library of the School of Health Sciences with a capacity of 120 people. The Department also has two (2) student laboratories with a capacity of 30 people each, equipped appropriately for the implementation of laboratory exercises and experiments. In addition, the Department has one (1) VR virtual reality room with a capacity of 30 people, one (1) computer room with a capacity of approximately 40 people and one (1) postgraduate room with a capacity of 80 people. It should be noted that the last two rooms are used jointly with the Department of Medicine. In general, the teaching spaces are marginally adequate given that extremely good planning is made for their full utilization throughout the day. This creates difficulty in finding spaces for supplementary courses or making up for courses. Therefore, it would be desirable to find additional teaching spaces.
In detail, the basic infrastructures of the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics (part of Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH)), which is located in the city of Alexandroupoli (Dragana area) include:
The main building (Building 10), which houses:
- The Department Secretariat: 4 offices with a total area of 72 m2 and 2 storage areas with a total area of 10 m2 (ground floor). It should be noted that these offices host the members of the Specialized Technical and Teaching Personnel (ETEP / EDIP) (total number of 3 people)
- 2 laboratories for student lab exercises with an area of 107 m2 and 126 m2 (ground floor),
- 1 Virtual reality (VR) room of 48 m2 (ground floor),
- 21 offices for faculty members of 15-20 m2,
- 2 offices for doctoral and postdoctoral candidates,
- 4 research laboratory spaces of 15-71 m2 and a total of 127 m2 (ground floor).
- 14 research laboratory spaces of 5-112 m2 and a total of 580 m2 (1st floor).
- 17 research laboratory spaces of 5-112 m2 and a total of 594 m2 (2nd floor)
- auxiliary and common areas (e.g. Department atrium).
Part of Building 8, which houses:
- 2 rooms of 139 m2 and 142 m2 (ground floor),
- 1 computer room of 72 m2 with ~40 workstations (ground floor),
- 3 offices for faculty members of 15-20 (ground floor, 1st floor),
- 1 postgraduate room of 72 m2 (1st floor).
It is worth noting that the DMBG has basic infrastructure for people with disabilities (e.g., a ramp to the building, classrooms on one level, wide doors in all classrooms, elevators, appropriately designed toilets, etc.), which are considered satisfactory. At the same time, in the Dragana area there are sports facilities that include an indoor gym of approximately 1,260 m2 and outdoor fields (football, basketball) with changing rooms (80 m2) with a total area of 6 acres. All students as well as the teaching and administrative staff of the Department have access to these facilities.
The classrooms, student laboratories and computers have internet access and digital projectors. The student laboratories are equipped with basic laboratory equipment (microscopes, stereoscopes, centrifuges, microcentrifuges, shakers, water baths, pipette sets, etc.). In addition to the classrooms and training laboratories, the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics has a wide range of modern infrastructure that supports both its research and educational work.
