The Department of Molecular Biology & Genetics (DMBG) implements the quality strategy and policy that is part of the Strategic Plan of the Democritus University of Thrace (DUTh), pursuing specific objectives related to ensuring the quality of the Undergraduate Program of Studies (UPS). It is committed to promote its academic profile, orienting the subject matter of the UPS to contemporary requirements, and implementing its strategic objectives, determining the means to achieve them. It aims at excellence in education and research, the production and dissemination of cutting-edge knowledge, and addressing contemporary scientific and social challenges. With the aim of continuously improving and providing feedback to the DMBG, we seek to continuously strengthen and upgrade the educational and research activities provided, along with strengthening of extroversion and connecting with the labour market. The strategy is designed to support the academic content and scientific orientation of the three cycles of studies offered by the department, in order to ensure the high quality of the educational, scientific, research, and administrative work of the Department of Biology, in accordance with international academic standards, current legislation, and the principles of the Hellenic Authority for Higher Education.
The quality strategy and policy of the DMBG aims, through student-centred teaching, to achieve critical learning outcomes related to basic biological concepts, the structure and function of organisms at the molecular, individual and biocommunity levels, scientific methods of experimentation and hypothesis testing, applications in health and agrobiology, etc. Emphasis is placed on the use of technology in the educational process through the use of basic tools, but new technologies are also utilized. The seven laboratory courses offer practical experience and skills. In each course, students can choose their textbook, while through an asynchronous e-learning platform, they receive digital material with the course content, instructions, electronic lectures, supplementary bibliography, references to exercises, videos, etc. Students with learning difficulties are given the opportunity to adopt alternative methods of learning, teaching, and assessment (midterm written exams, oral exams, project presentations, etc.).
