In the Department of Molecular Biology & Genetics, the completion of a Bachelor’s Thesis is optional. The Thesis corresponds to 20 teaching units, has a workload of 30 ECTS credits, is offered in the 8th semester of the Undergraduate Study Program and lasts for one (1) academic semester (thirteen -13- weeks).

The Bachelor’s Thesis (BT) is an experimental research work aimed at practical training in laboratory techniques, the organization of experimental protocols, the sharpening of the student’s critical thinking skills, the understanding of scientifically documented research practice, the use of bibliography, the analysis and evaluation of results, and the writing of an independent scientific text. For this reason, BTs that exclusively involve bibliographic research are excluded. In addition, BTs may be meta-data analysis research projects or field research in the context of the professional development of bioscientists and lifelong learning. The topic of the thesis must be original. In this sense, theses in which the student undertakes exclusively practical work, e.g., in a diagnostic laboratory, without there being a research question to investigate, are excluded. Although the nature of the thesis is exclusively experimental research work, the approval of original critical review topics that require primary collection, study, analysis/meta-analysis of the literature, and commentary on scientific findings in the light of the scientific literature, may be permitted in special cases of force majeure/impediment to the student’s laboratory work (e.g., illness/pandemic, etc.), always with the consent of the supervisor.

The BT can be undertaken in Greece, specifically: a) in the relevant Department, b) in another similar Department of a Greek university, c) in a recognised (institutionalised) Research Institute. To undertake a thesis in Greece, students submit a request after an invitation and within an exclusive deadline set each year and announced to students via eClass, under the course “Thesis.” To complete a thesis in the home department, submit an application form, while to complete a thesis at another university or research institute, submit the application form and the confirmation of submission of the thesis summary.

In addition, the thesis can be completed abroad: a) At universities with which the Department has signed agreements through the European Erasmus+ Program (in accordance with the Erasmus+ Regulations of the Democritus University of Thrace and the department), b) At universities or research institutes in other countries (even outside the European Union) after signing a memorandum of cooperation.

Students working on their thesis are required to follow the work programme indicated by their supervisor and to respect the rules of operation of the laboratory hosting them. They must comply with the Supervisor’s instructions and focus their efforts on the success of the research project assigned to them.

In order to undertake their thesis in Greece, students must submit a request following an invitation, and within a specific deadline set each year and announced to students via the eclass platform for the course “Thesis.”

To complete their thesis in the home department, students must fill out the corresponding application form.

To complete their thesis at another university or research institute, students must complete the application form and the summary submission certificate.

At the end of the thesis, students must present the results of their work in a special document that will indicatively consist of the following parts: Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Bibliography, and anything else deemed necessary by the supervisor. The thesis may be written in Greek or English.

The cover and inside cover are already specified. After completing the experimental part, writing the thesis, and obtaining the supervisor’s approval for completion of the process, the student is required to submit two copies of the thesis in electronic form (CD or USB stick) to the Secretariat (one for the Secretariat’s archives and one for the Department Library).

Along with the two copies of the thesis, students must also submit the following forms to the Secretariat:

  • Declaration regarding the preparation and writing of the thesis
  • Approval for Electronic Publication
  •  Thesis Details

The Supervisor submits the thesis grade using the relevant confirmation form
The thesis is graded on a 10-point scale (with a pass mark of 5).
